Formatting the Fujitsu 2.3 Gigabyte Optical Disk

Formatting an optical disk is not possible using normal DOS formatting methods (format and fdisk); however,once formatted files may be erased using
DOS commands (delete or erase).

There is a formatting utility that is supplied with the optical Drive.

The following procedure is started by typing “fjfdisk” at the DOS prompt:

Low level formatting (Step 3.) is not needed in most cases, only use Low level (physical formatting) if Highlevel (Logical formatting) fails
when using media other than Fujitsu.

Operating the MO Disk Formatter:

Step 1. Execute “FJFDISK.EXE” to start the formatter the following initialscreen is displayed:

Move the cursor on the screen and select the drive to be formatted.

(Select “Quit” to terminate the program.)

Once a drive is selected, the format selection screen is displayed.

Step 2. Selecting “Logical formatting”

Select “A Hard Disk type” displays the following message at the center of the screen.

Select “Execute” to start logical formatting on the disk

Enter the volume label. (Or simply press [Enter] to set NO NAME as the volume
label.)

While the formatting is in progress, the following message is displayed at the center of the screen:

Formatting Now

After formatting is complete, the following message is displayed:

The Optical Disk is now ready for use with the ect MAD 8D System.

Step 3. Selecting “Low Level Formatting”

Not needed in most cases with Disks supplied from Eddy Current Technology Incorporated.
May occur when media other than Fujitsu media is being formatted.
Use only when the Logical level formating fails.
The MO Disk Formatter will prompt you that the disk needs to be Low level formatted.

Selecting “Low Level Formatting” displays the following screen:

All existing data on disk will be lost.
Low-level formatting will take approximately 10 to 20 minutes,
and cannot be canceled.
Are you sure you want to continue?
Execute
Abort

Select “Execute” to start physical formatting.

The following message is displayed:

Low Level Formatting Now
Start time: XX:XX:XX
Now Time : XX:XX:XX

After physical formatting is complete, the following message is displayed:

Low-level formatting successfully completed
Push any key

All Disks must be High level formatted before they can be used with the ect MAD 8D System.

Follow the procedure outlined in Step 1.


FORMATTING PINNACLE 4.6 GByte DRIVE USING VER 3.33

This procedure uses the Magneto-optical Disk Formatter Ver 3.33. The procedure will be the same for other versions of the Formatter,however, directory names and keystrokes may not be exact.

The Formatter is menu driven. This is a two step procedure; however, if Pinnacle Optical Media is used, it may not be necessary to perform the low level format. This can be determined by trying to format high level first.

The disk will not high level format:

LOW LEVEL FORMATTING

Type “scsifmt” < Enter > from the DOS C:\prompt and follow the on screen menus.

HIGH LEVEL FORMAT

Type “afdisk” < Enter > from the DOS C:\ prompt. Select “Pinnacle APEX 4.6GB”.
Select “Use Extended BIOS….” and press < Enter >
Press < Esc > to continue.
Press < Esc > to continue again.
Select “Standard Hard Disk Format”. Press < Enter > to continue.
Press < Ins > to create a DOS partition.
Press < Enter >.
Select “yes”. Press < Enter >.
The DOS partition has been created Start=0 End=250 size=1969Megs.
Press < Esc > to exit AFDISK program.
Press < Esc >.
Select “Yes” and press< Enter >
Reboot


Formatting the Fujitsu 640 MByte Magneto-Optical Disk

From Drive C:\,change to the Directory C:\FJMO and type < FJFDISK > < Enter >. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Fujitsu M2513A and press <Enter >.

The 640 MByte disk must first be low level formatted. Use the arrow keys to highlight Low Level Formatting. Use the arrow keys to highlight Execute and press < Enter >. While the disk is being low level formatted, the screen will display a message level formattingoperation is complete, the screen will display a message that low level formatting was successful.Press < Enter >.

The disk must now be high level formatted. Use the arrow keys to select AT HDD Type and press < Enter >. The screen showing the partition table will be displayed. Use the arrow keys to select and press < Enter >. The allocatable area screen will be select 604 MB ALLOCATABLE. A confirmation screen will be displayed. Press < Enter >. Select a volume label or press < Enter > for none. At this point, the display will be flashing.

Press < Escape > and you will be asked to Register or Abort. Use the arrow keys to select Register and press < Enter >. A formatting now message will be displayed while the high level formatting operation is in progress. The message AT HDD type for NOTE: If the screen with the message “Delete the Partition?” should appear, highlight No and press < Enter >.


Formatting the 128 MByte or 230 MByte Optical Cartridges Using Adaptec EZSCSI

First, do the low level format. Second, do the high level format.

I.LOW LEVEL FORMAT

From the C:\ prompt, type CD\SCSI.

From the C:\SCSI directory, type SCSIFMT <Enter>. Follow the screen menus to low level format the cartridge as follows:

Press <Enter> “to continue
Press down arrow <> to select SCSI device to be formatted.
Select “SCSI I.D.#2 – Fujitsu M2511A Revision:” if a 128 MByte drive.
Select “SCSI I.D.#2 – Fujitsu M2512A Revision:” if a 230 MByte drive.
Press <Enter> to confirm selection.
Choose “Format Disk”. Press<Enter> to confirm selection.
Press up arrow <> to “Yes” Format Media? Press <Enter> to format.
Press up arrow <> to “Yes” Are You Sure? Press <Enter> to format.

The message
“!!! Please Wait !!! !!!
Please Wait !!!”
will be flashing on the screen while the disk is being formatted. Typical formatting time for an optical disk cartridge ranges
from 10 to 20 minutes.
When “Formatting Complete” message appears, press <Esc> to continue.
Press <Esc> to exit low level formatter again. Again press <Esc> to exit low level formatter.
Press <Enter> to exit low level formatter.

II.HIGH LEVEL FORMAT

After the low level format is completed, at the C:\SCSI prompt, type AFDISK <Enter>. Follow the screen menus to high level format the
cartridge as follows:

Press <Enter> to “Select SCSI Device”.
Press <Esc> to confirm the disk is unformatted.
Press <Esc> to continue AFDISK.
Use down arrow <> to choose “Hard Disk Format”. Press <Enter> to select and continue.
Press <Insert> to create a DOS partition.
Create a DOS partition.
For a 128 MByte Drive, create a DOS partition with start cylinder: 0 and end cylinder: 120.
For a 230 MByte Drive, create a DOSpartition with start cylinder: 0 and end cylinder: 216.
Press <Enter> to continue.
Use up arrow <> to choose “Yes” and press <Enter> to continue. It will take about 5 minutes for the DOS partition to be created. “Please Wait” will flash until complete.
After the partition has been created press <Esc> to exit.
Again press <Esc>. Use up arrow <> to choose “Yes” and press <Enter> to select. The system must be rebooted with the optical cartridge in the drive. Press <CTRL> <ALT> <DEL> to continue.


MAXTOR WORM Optical Disk Drive 800 MB Cartridge Format Procedure

The steps listed below are necessary to format an optical disk for use with the MAD8D software. For further reference, please read pages 61 through 67 of the COREL SCSI! User Manual.

Boot the computer.
Put the optical disk in the optical disk drive.
At the DOS prompt, type CFORMAT. A Select Format Option Menu should appear.
Select Format Media. An OK to reformat media (old data will be hidden)? message may appear.
If the message appears and you wish to reformat the disk, select Yes.
When the Select Cartridge Compatibility Option Menu appears, select MS/PC – DOS 4.X, 5.X, DR-DOS 5.X AND OS/2 (but not DOS 3.X).
From the Volume Size Menu, select 1 for Volumes.
From the Ready to Begin High-Level Format Menu, select Begin high level format process.
When the About to begin high level format – is this ok? message appears, select Yes.
When formatting is complete, press any key to exit the CFORMAT program.
